AiRo’s Platform for Biotechnological Organ-on-a-Chip Drug Development

Industry: Biotech

Client Overview:

The client specializes in organs-on-chip and is renowned for developing one of the first organs-on-chips.

The Client Built Numerous Organ-on-a-Chip Platforms with Funding from National Institutions

Creating new medications is a difficult procedure. After clinical trials, a new drug's approval can take more than ten years and cost between $10 million and $2 billion. The ineffectiveness of animal testing, which is still the benchmark for pharmaceutical research, contributes to the issue. Due to the physiological differences between humans and animals, up to 90% of medications that have been licensed for use in people after clearing animal testing fail in human trials.

A major biotech business saw the potential of organ-on-a-chip technology and sought to revolutionize the field. Organ-chips are polymer chips that imitate human organ functions and the physiological milieu for in vitro disease modelling, drug testing, and precision medicine. They do this by using microfluidic cell structure.

With our experience in embedded IoT software and data analytics solutions, the company built numerous organ-on-a-chip platforms with funding backing from national institutions.

AiRo Helps Client Build Integrated Internet of Things (Iot) Software for the Culture Module of the Organ-on-a-Chip Platform

Client asked us to:

  • Create integrated Internet of Things (IoT) software for the culture module of the organ-on-a-chip platform, a lab-ready device that automates the flow of cell culture fluid and mechanical forces used to perform cell, tissue, and organ functions.

  • Develop a solution to design and create the front end and back end of desktop and mobile software programs that allow for the management and design of studies, the analysis of data, and the integration of these programs with common analytical tools.

  • As part of our services, we set up a completely automated CI/CD pipeline employing containerized microservices infrastructure for development, testing, and production.Offer services for end-to-end testing.

AiRo’s Solution Proves to be Instrumental in Organ-on-a-chip Technology Development

For the culture module, the main instrument of the organ-on-a-chip platform that automates the flow of culture fluids through the chip's microfluidic channels and generates mechanical stresses to drive organ pressure, we have developed an embedded system and human-machine interface design.

The embedded IoT system is intended for using the culture module to perform, observe, and calibrate studies while also providing study and other data to the platform administration application over the MQTT protocol for analysis. The system gathers a variety of information, including pressure, temperature, study state, and progress. The following are some of its primary features:

  • Culture conditions are programmed using an automated process

  • Stretch parameter control Media flow rate regulation in chips

  • The ability to prevent bubble formation

  • Data analytics and study management

Additionally, AiRo has created study management and data analytics software, which gives researchers protocols and study plans so they may create and conduct experiments and do data analysis.

Microservices are the foundation of the mobile/desktop solution, ensuring scalability, low coupling, high cohesion, as well as quicker builds and new feature rollouts. The study management and data analytics solution incorporates OpenID Connect for safe user sign-in and offers the following features:

  • Samples of culture protocol designs for studies

  • A study timeline page that lists the culture protocol's tasks

  • The capacity to modify the timeline by including images and notes

  • The capacity to distribute and replace research chips

  • A master datasheet for storing study design and execution activity within apps

  • A data analytics tool that offers calculators that can conduct calculations with a single click and support a variety of formulas

  • An easy-to-use admin panel that enables administrators to control user roles and permissions across several studies to maintain research security

Client Recorded Significant Gains Post-Deployment

The lab-ready platform enables researchers without prior experience in organ-on-a-chip technology to simply design and carry out studies by giving them a window into activities inside living human cells.Speeds up drug development and lowers costs used by more than 100 labs, including leading pharmaceutical firms and US government organizations. Applied to research COVID-19 vaccine efficacy
