Tier 1 US Carrier Successfully Cut Costs By Moving Kubernetes On-Premises

Industry: Telecom

  • Migrating in stages with thorough testing reduces the chance of errors and complications.

  • The AiRo-supported private data center has a better economy than the public cloud.

  • The internal team can upskill autonomy by shadowing Kubernetes implementation professionals without paying for pricey training.

Client Overview

The client is a Tier-1 US carrier that wanted to shift its mission-critical teleconference app from public cloud Kubernetes to an on-premises deployment to reduce network costs.

The teleconference solution within this Tier-1 US carrier is one of the most innovative business areas. The application was already using Kubernetes on a public cloud, but due to its bandwidth-intensive nature, it was causing significant network expenditures.

Saving Costs While Maintaining Efficiency Of Mission Critical Operations Required An Innovative Solution

The client realized it needed to move the solution away from the public cloud to reduce costs. But on the other hand, the company could not afford to have the mission-critical program go down.

In addition, the telecommunications business wanted to duplicate its existing public cloud architecture and configuration on the new environment to ensure a seamless transfer and avoid overburdening its developers with testing.

With this in mind, the carrier set out to find a sophisticated on-premises Kubernetes solution that could support a networking configuration that included host-based networking, multiple interfaces, and extremely specialized network security regulations.

The Client Found Confidence In AiRo's Charmed Kubernetes Solution

Charmed Kubernetes provided the essential flexibility to satisfy the company's demanding requirements. However, because the company lacked internal Kubernetes experience, it hired AiRo to help with the rollout.

The company employed Charmed Kubernetes to perfectly match its public cloud architecture, ensuring a smooth transfer. In addition, a hybrid cloud strategy was implemented for a deliberate, step-by-step migration. This method minimizes disturbance to important workloads while generating considerable and continuously increasing cost reductions.

The carrier decided on a two-year migration plan to make the change as smooth as possible, employing a temporary hybrid cloud strategy. In contrast, public cloud instances are gradually decommissioned in favor of new, on-premises clusters. Each stage of the migration is extensively tested and validated before the project moves forward to the next phase, starting with proof-of-concept and ending with production.

AiRo's engineers placed Charmed Kubernetes directly on the bare metal servers for increased performance in the on-premises solution, which uses AiRo's provisioning and orchestration platform. Throughout the process, the carrier's internal team trained AiRo experts to obtain the hands-on experience they'll need to operate and maintain the deployment independently.

Client Achieves Substantial Reduction In-Service Costs And Higher Efficiency Of Mission Critical Operations

Following the successful completion of testing, the company began shifting workloads on-premises, and it is now in the midst of a complete production deployment. Compared to the public cloud, the business has significantly reduced service costs due to the superior economics of a private data center and AiRo's subscription model.

When the migration is complete, the carrier will be able to manage its Kubernetes deployment thanks to the shadowing process fully. In addition, because the team is learning by seeing a real-world production implementation, it obtains first-hand expertise without an expensive training course, which saves the company money and reduces the need for long-term external support.

Finally, the new Kubernetes deployment is built to be easily dismantled and rebuilt at any moment. Model-driven architecture is used to build Charmed Kubernetes.

As long as the organization has defined the different components of its cluster in a model, it may deploy as many clusters as it needs with only a few easy instructions, basically using the model as a template. Similarly, a single command can assist in the dismantling of clusters. Moving on to these features will also assure scalability.
